Trophies Over The Ages
Historically, trophies stood for success against enemies and were erected in a war field by the victor. The practice started in Greece where the vanquished enemy’s weapons or arms were exhibited as trophies with an account of the battle inscribed on them. They were treated as offerings made to the Gods for bringing them success in the war. Actually the origin of the term trophy lies in the Greek term for defeat – ‘tropaion’.
Ancient Romans had a different way of raising trophies to their victories. They erected tall pillars and columns that bore a sculpted trophy high up for people to see and admire their victory. In later years, the kings and monarchs started giving out chalices to the best performing sportsmen in the kingdom.
Designing a trophy is usually a complicated process. Just like other design jobs, even trophy designing requires a great deal of analysis, market research and a detailed study of the elements to be used. Since trophies are souvenirs that are cherished by awardees for a long time, they have to be not just stylish but also quite sturdy.
These days, trophies are awarded for symbolizing all types of accomplishments, be it in sports, jobs or even for scholastic achievements. Trophies are available in different designs, sizes and with various provisions for engravings. Over the years the conventional metal atop a wooden base design has given way to glass, gold, fibre or silver frame, or crystal trophy. Customers now have a vast range of trophies varying in shape, size and design to choose from. The wide variety of trophies found in the market has made the job of buying the right trophy a lot easier than it used to be.
